7 Things to do in Southern California this Holiday Season
While the rest of the country braves snowy roads and frigid temperatures this holiday season, Southern California’s famous sunny winter weather allows residents to get out of the house and partake in a variety of activities during their time off work. With both indoor and outdoor holiday events to choose from, there’s no excuse to stay cooped up around the fireplace that never gets used anyway. Take a look at these 7 things to do in Southern California this holiday season:
1. Ice skating by the sea
Ice skating and ocean views might not seem like a natural combination, but you’ll change your mind once you glide around the Hotel del Coronado’s spectacular ice rink situated right next to the beach. Decorated with thousands of white lights, the historic hotel provides a festive backdrop, along with holiday music and the inviting aroma of hot chocolate in the air. Just don’t forget to dress warmly—even in SoCal, the ocean breeze can be chilly this time of year.
2. Robolights in Palm Springs
You might know of a few local neighborhoods that go all-out with the holiday decorations, but you’ve never seen anything like Robolights in Palm Springs. The 4-acre light display with long zig-zagging pathways features a whimsical futuristic winter wonderland, imagining what the North Pole would look like if Santa Claus employed robots instead of elves. It might sound strange, but once you see it for yourself, you’ll understand why Robolights has been featured on several TV shows throughout the years.
3. Griffith Park Holiday Light Festival Train Ride
For a more traditional light display, check out the Griffith Park Holiday Light Festival Train Ride in Los Angeles. The festive one-mile track features tens of thousands of lights and captivating holiday scenes guaranteed to put you and your family in a jolly mood after a day of braving the malls for last-minute shopping.
4. Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo
The San Diego Zoo is world-famous for having thousands of animals on sprawling grounds in the heart of Balboa Park. During the holiday season, the Zoo’s Jungle Bells event dazzles with a twinkling wonderland filled with animal light sculptures, festive foods, and holiday-inspired performances like acrobatic trampoline elves, carols from The Tinseltones, and much more.
5. SkyPark at Santa’s Village
Santa’s Village near Lake Arrowhead was a Southern California institution for decades until it closed in 1998. Nearly 20 years later, the Christmas-themed wonderland reopened as SkyPark at Santa’s Village, still North Pole-themed but now featuring new attractions, restaurants, and shops, plus opportunities to bike, hike, fish, and zipline in the woods. Of course, the main attraction is the big guy himself, so don’t forget to stop by his shop in the cozy log cabin village.
6. CHILL at the Queen Mary
The historic Queen Mary is a worthwhile destination any time of the year, but during the holidays the floating hotel sets up a 38,000-square foot Ice Adventure Park on shore, featuring ice skating, bumper boats, a zipline, and a two-story, 140-foot-long ice tubing slide. CHILL also features Christmas traditions, music, and holiday food from six different regions of the world. Be sure to stay for the nightly Christmas tree lighting and visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus, plus fireworks on Sunday nights.
7. Holiday gambling at Golden Acorn Casino
